From agtech to robotics, geothermal energy to medical device technology, a suite of startups from the entrepreneurship@UBC (e@UBC) ecosystem pitched their businesses to a packed house of investors at UBC Robson Square. The startup incubator and accelerator for UBC students, faculty, and alumni celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, having supported 700 ventures, generated over $737 million in revenue, and created more than 1,700 full-time jobs throughout its lifetime.
“There's no denying that today's fundraising environment is tough,” said Michelle Sklar, entrepreneur in residence and head of venture growth strategy at e@UBC. “Valuations are depressed, [and] many investors are retracting and looking to provide cover for their existing portfolio. But we've seen these cycles before, and we will ride them out and we will be stronger.”
Ventures went through a rigorous application process, including a framework of the “four Ts” developed by e@UBC: team, tech, traction, and treasury, as well as impact. The selected 16 early-stage startups are ready to raise capital, including seed and series A fundraising rounds.
