Local VR camp looks at high school students to create solutions to Vancouver's housing problem
Led by Ethọ́s Lab, Centre for Digital Media, and Urbanarium, youth will be guided in creating societies centred around unity, inclusion, and harmony
Ethọ́s Lab, an afterschool innovation academy for youth, is partnering up with the graduate program, Centre for Digital Media (CDM), and the non-profit, Urbanarium, to organize a VR camp for youth to build societies solving problems related to housing sustainability in Vancouver. Using the content creation platform, Unity VR, industry experts will guide participants in creating societies centred around unity, inclusion, and harmony.
“There is something powerful about having teens hack problems in the world around them,” said Anthonia Ogundele, founder of Ethọ́s Lab. “There is also something more awesome when you create a supportive, inclusive space that fosters this curiosity. Teens are our future and will be taking spatial computing to new heights. Ethọ́s Lab's Building Unity XR Media Lab Camp enables youth to leverage platforms like Unity to do just that.”
The camp will be facilitated by Unity 3D artist and instructor, Meehae Song, and illustrator and program manager, Jazz Groden-Gilchrist. Youth can expect to dive into issues impacting cities, design inclusive cities through prototyping, advance their interpersonal and communication skills, and learn about emerging careers in urban planning and mixed reality.
The VR camp is being offered to Grade 8 to 12 students and will take place between Mar. 18-25 at the CDM on 685 Great Northern W., Vancouver, BC. The cost is $500, however, financial assistance is available.
“We are encouraging parents of all backgrounds to consider getting their teens involved in building this inclusive future,” said Ogundele.
