How FuelSrv is serving Vancouver’s vehicles

What happens when a rocket scientist hates gas stations?

Tyler Reyno took the phrase “it doesn’t take a rocket scientist” literally. After initially embarking down the path of aerospace engineering, Reyno changed course. He is now the founder and CEO of FuelSrv, a Vancouver-based mobile fuel delivery service.

What it does: The company's name is a dead giveaway. It promises fuel, served. FuelSrv delivers fuel where and when needed—think vehicle fleets, heavy-duty machinery, or job sites. While at its face that may seem fairly full-stop, the company has a robust suite of internal innovations to pair with its business model. FuelSrv’s proprietary tools power the company’s logistics and customer experience. These include a platform for automated routing of on-the-move vehicles using real-time GPS and traffic data, an app showing geo-tagged status updates and data on its drivers, and a customer dashboard with fuel insights, ROI tracking, AI anomaly detection, and carbon offset reporting.

Why it matters: Have you heard the one about gas prices? It’s no joke these days. But, if your livelihood depends on spending time behind the wheel then it’s a bigger time suck than money pit—FuelSrv calls it the “gas station chore.” We all could use a few less chores in our lives, but laundry and dishes don’t impact the bottom line like fuel ups could for certain businesses. Alleviating that is the stuff of dreams for the company’s founder.

How it started: A PR backgrounder on Reyno highlights that he dreamt of a world with no worries about ever getting gas. His journey to make that dream a reality sees stops on both coasts and pretty much everywhere in between. But first was that aforementioned time in aerospace. Reyno even founded a Halifax-based consulting company that also worked to design, manufacture, and operate rocket technologies to deliver small satellites into low Earth orbit.

From there, Reyno took his talents west to Ontario. He had gigs supervising engineering students and testing engineering software. Ontario is also key to the FuelSrv origin story. It was in the province that Reyno hand-built FuelSrv's first fueling truck, packed up his belongings (and his fiancée), and drove cross-country to Vancouver.

Now on the West Coast, Reyno’s entrepreneurial journey with FuelServ began with distinct side-hustle energy, delivering fuel from local gas stations to small businesses in the morning before working a full-time engineering job during the day. That was before landing the company’s first big customer.

Who relies on it: That first big customer was stalwart of Vancouver roads, Evo Car Share. The deal was both a blessing and a curse. Anyone who has looked for an Evo knows that they are equal parts abundant and scarce. It posed a unique challenge for FuelSrv: How do you fuel moving vehicles spread across a city? The answer was that real-time routing platform, which remains core to FuelSrv's operations today.

Speaking of today, the company has filled over 400,000 tanks with 14 million litres of fuel at the time of this writing. FuelSrv’s over 150 customers include everything from municipal vehicle fleets and logistics operators to on-site fueling for off-the-grid workers. In addition to Greater Vancouver, the company recently expanded its operations to Edmonton. He may have left aerospace but Reyno is still shooting for the moon—or, at least, the City of Champions.
