A UI/UX designer, Marshall is looking to help more local startups and agencies with all things design
Welcome to Vancouver Tech Journal’s Member Spotlight, a place where we learn more about our community members, share their unique stories and specialities, what they can offer other members, and the kind of connections they’re looking for.
Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Makena Marshall, a UI/UX designer who’s passionate about creating well-designed tools to improve our daily lives. She's also a loyal VTJ coffee-goer who recently got a new gig from our weekly networking event.
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Vancouver.
What’s your job?
I’m currently seeking new opportunities, but I’m working with a charity called A Happier, Healthier Me to help with the usability of their website and assist their marketing team. I’m also doing branding and visual design for Common, a DIY event management app that provides innovative networking tools and industry leading event data.
Tell us what you do.
I’m a UI/UX designer with digital marketing training. My knowledge will lend itself well if you're looking to revamp your website and get it across to more people.
How long have you been a part of the Vancouver tech ecosystem?
For about three months. I decided to take a UI/UX design bootcamp in September and graduated in December. Since then, I’ve been networking and partaking in more tech events.
What do you need?
Good friends, good food, and new opportunities. I’m interested in working in UI/UX design and the digital marketing space — preferably for a start-up or agency where I can continue to learn.
What can you help others with?
I can help design your digital product, website, and/or landing page. I have experience with branding and SEO content and can assist with creating your visual identity.
I can also offer delicious homemade sourdough bread.
Why are you a VTJ member?
Because of the lovely people. Trying to get into tech at the moment is hard. The VTJ team has helped me tremendously to not only get out of my head and the solitary bubble of applying to positions but also to create connections and provide opportunities.
Who’s your dream #VTJLive speaker?
I would love to hear from Joe Gebbia, the co-founder of Airbnb; Nicolas Cole, a very successful digital writer; and David Ogilvy, the founder of Ogilvy & Mather, as well if the impossible could be possible.
