It is always tempting to chase after roles at big-name companies and fancy titles. But what if the key to your career fulfillment isn’t the logo on your LinkedIn, but finding a company that aligns with your work style and goals?
People are all unique, much like no two companies are the same. For some, the structured environment of a large enterprise might be the perfect match. For others, the fast-paced startup may be where they thrive; therefore, choosing the right organization is an important decision to help you feel fulfilled.
To achieve career success, look for an organization that fulfills this formula: a role that leverages your strengths, a culture that aligns with your values, and a mission that resonates with your purpose. Together they create a fulfilling and sustainable career path.
Careers In Technology and Innovation (CITI) has joined the Vancouver tech ecosystem to support individuals in finding their place and grow meaningful careers. Through inclusivity and creating opportunities, CITI helps professionals navigate the technology landscape. Currently, 35 Vancouver members benefit from CITI’s online events, advisors, resources, and programs. CITI also host industry connects to support the general tech ecosystem with their career journey.
Discovering Your Perfect Fit
Ultimately, deciding on what size organization to work for is dependent on your career goals and your work style. The right fit is about finding the environment where you can thrive.
This theme was central to the “Navigating Your Tech Career” event hosted by CITI this November. This event was a unique opportunity to explore and directly engage with professionals working in an enterprise, scaleup, and startup. Representatives from leading organizations like Amazon, Telus, and Clio shared insights, united by a commitment to helping others find their place in tech.
The event provided professionals with an opportunity to reflect on their skills, aspirations, and work preferences. By exploring the advantages and challenges of each organization, individuals were empowered to make informed decisions about which setting would best support their long-term fulfillment.
Nadia Hosseinzadeh, director of operations at Monachus Solutions, shared her remarkable journey at the event. As a trusted advisor at CITI, Nadia embraced opportunities to network with the tech community.
Her career path wasn’t always rooted in tech. Beginning with studies in political science and urban planning, Nadia’s knack for organizing activities naturally led her to project management where she has successfully managed multi-million-dollar projects and cultivated robust stakeholder relationships.
“Diversity of experiences and perspectives is not just valuable but essential to the growth and innovation of the tech sector,” she shared. “There’s a place for everyone; the key is finding your niche and seizing opportunities.”
Expanding Your Network
Networking is a powerful tool for career advancement, offering opportunities to connect with professionals who can guide and support your journey.
CITI’s entrance into the Vancouver market includes monthly industry connections. The organization provides a casual and welcoming environment for local tech professionals to connect and share ideas, featuring special guests to help attendees on their journey.
It is important for professionals to engage with a diverse group of people, allowing them to gain access to various perspectives, experiences, and advice that can help individuals better understand their aspirations and career goals.
“I’ve been part of regular meetings which helped me grow my skills and gain confidence.” said Andrew Kukhar, software developer and CITI Member.
Andrew has joined every industry connects event. Originally from Ukraine, he embarked on an eight-month journey to land his first tech job here. He is now a software developer, and over the past year, has worked with a startup building a specialized web app for the real estate industry.
“I’ve been with CITI pretty much since I started my journey in Canada,” he reflects. “They were there for me every step of the way — helping me navigate job hunting, offering advice, and connecting me with mentors and opportunities.” Today, Andrew gives back by helping newcomers and those pivoting into tech, just as others once helped him.
Andrew’s story is one of over 350 success stories demonstrating the impact of CITI’s initiatives.
