COAST’s Pitchfest offers oceantech entrepreneurs a stage for investment

Applications for the competition close on October 1, with the Pitchfest event taking place two weeks later to showcase the finalists.

COAST, the Centre for Ocean Applied Sustainable Technology, is once again at the forefront of driving ocean innovation. The organization is bringing together innovators, investors, and ocean technology entrepreneurs for the much-anticipated second edition of COAST Pitchfest, presented by Seaspan.

This event, taking place on October 16 at the COAST Ocean Innovation Hub in Victoria, reflects the organization’s ongoing mission to strengthen Pacific Canada’s blue economy by providing a platform for emerging talent and transformative ideas.

Following the success of the inaugural Pitchfest, this year’s competition will showcase five finalists, each presenting their innovative concepts to a panel of industry experts. The winning company will take home a $10,000 cash prize and will have the opportunity to meet with investors the following day, to build their journey in the blue economy. Additionally, all five finalists will receive a one-year upgraded COAST Navigator membership, providing them with ongoing support as they continue to advance their innovative ventures.

The inaugural Pitchfest, held in Vancouver, set a high standard. Annie Dahan of Seacork Studio won with her groundbreaking concept of biodegradable acoustic panels made from seaweed — an idea aimed at reshaping the world’s connection with sustainable materials. Seacork’s innovative approach and dedication set the startup apart from the competition.

For startups whose ideas are in development, near commercialization, or at the prototype stage, PitchFest offers an opportunity to present to high-level investors and leaders within the blue economy.

This is a chance for ocean tech entrepreneurs to showcase their innovations on a larger stage and accelerate their growth. Eligible applicants must be based in B.C., in the pre-commercialization stage, and COAST members (individual membership is free — more information can be found here). The deadline to apply is October 1, 2024.
